Cyclobalanopsis glauca

Cyclobalanopsis glauca is an evergreen tree belonging to the Fagaceae family. It is a subtropical tree species and one of the most widely distributed tree species in China. Its leaves change color with the changes in the weather, which is caused by the change in the ratio of chlorophyll and anthocyanin contained in the leaves. Therefore, it is called the "meteorological tree". After a long period of drought and before it is about to rain, when encountering strong light and sweltering days, the synthesis of chlorophyll is blocked, making anthocyanin dominant in the leaves, and the leaves gradually turn red. Based on their usual observations of Cyclobalanopsis glauca, people in some places have gained experience: when the leaves turn red, there will be heavy rain in this area within one or two days. After the rain stops and the sky clears, the leaves turn dark green again. Farmers use this information to forecast the weather and arrange farm work.
